Welcome to our department

The Grand Army of the Republic, often referred to as the G.A.R., was founded at Decatur, Illinois on April 6, 1866. Dr. Benjamin Franklin Stephenson founded the organization on the three cardinal principles of Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty and these principles guided the G.A.R. throughout its existence. The site is organized in the following fashion:
Leadership - Department Officers, history, contact information
Camps - State size view of camp locations and links to camp websites
Events - Department event calendar and important dates
About - History of the department and order
Resources - Useful items for the SUVCW members and camps
Thank you, for visiting our website. Enjoy

Brothers and Sisters of Our Order

The Sesquicentennial of Doctor Benjamin Franklin Stephenson's
creatIon of the Grand Army of the Republic on April 6, 1866, will be
upon us before we know it.
Although a beautiful monument was erected at his gravesite in 1894,
in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Petersburg, Illinois, the grounds around
it are in need of improvement. What we are proposing is a Memorial
Plaza, a paved signature brick plaza that is consistent with memorial
designs of the Grand Army of the Republic from the 1880's to 1920's.
Signature bricks can be purchased in three sizes, 4 x 8, 8 x 8 & 12 x 12.
The goal is to have the Doctor Benjamin F. Stephenson Memorial Plaza
completed by the Sesquicentennial year of 2016.
Through our efforts dear Brothers and Sisters we can create a fitting memorial
site to do honor to the man who created the organization to which we owe our
very existence.
